Our history
In 2011 Ellgia Limited was established in Cambridge, our mission is to provide bespoke and differentiated waste management and recycling services to our customers.
Our aim as a business is to strive towards, decarbonisation, reducing the carbon impact of waste and turning all waste where possible into a resource. Applying the principles of the waste hierarchy is at the heart of our solution design, eradicating waste production, reuse of valuable resources, recycling materials and recovering energy from residual waste has driven the strategy and the journey of Ellgia’s growth.
Now, our network of recycling and waste processing facilities, comprehensive collection fleet and waste to fuel processing capability allows Ellgia to provide solutions that deliver the highest levels of environmental performance.
We are proud to have developed a portfolio of complimentary services across the East of England, from four permitted facilities employing over 160 local colleagues with a strategy to continue to invest in innovations and technology to ensure our customers have the optimum opportunity to reduce the environmental impact of their waste and recycling activities.
The ownership of waste collections has allowed Ellgia to develop processing technologies that mine the waste streams for valuable resources in the form of recyclate.
Our journey since the business establishment in 2011 has been exciting and transformational process turning a simple collection business into one of the regions largest independent market leaders in environmental solutions.
2011
After 20 years working experience within the waste industry within the major waste organisations and running his own businesses founder and Chairman, Steve Crook, creates Ellgia Recycling Limited, a collection and recycling trading business based in Cambridge.
2012
Ellgia purchased its first collection vehicles, to establish Roll-on services for both waste and recycling collections.
Ellgia extend their geographical collection capability with the acquisition of the assets and business of Haven Recycling Limited based in Boston, Lincolnshire.
Ellgia develop their plastic recycling and processing capability with the acquisition of M&S Holdings plastic recycling, in Boston, Lincolnshire creating extended recycling capabilities.
Ellgia further consolidate their collection portfolio with mobile compaction and commercial waste collection services in Lincolnshire with the acquisition of Carlton Recycling Limited, New York, Lincolnshire.
2013
Ellgia develop their Norfolk collection business with the acquisition of Pips Skips, Norwich, Norfolk.
Ellgia take a step change with the development of its first major processing facility by acquiring the property to develop and start commissioning of its material recycling facility (MRF) in Ely, Cambridgeshire.
Ellgia’s collection network is further enhanced by the acquisition of the trade waste business from Wasteaway Limited, Boston, Lincolnshire. This latest acquisition allows the business in Cambridge and Lincolnshire to join allowing full coverage between the locations.
Ellgia’s newly commissioned MRF and collection depot based in Ely is optimised with the significant acquisition of A J Thompsons Paper Recycling business based in Newmarket, Suffolk.
Ellgia open the doors to its material recycling facility (MRF) in Ely, Cambridgeshire.
2014
Ellgia’s humble beginnings in a serviced office in Cambridge are consolidated by the merging of Ellgia’s head office and admin function into the new facility in Ely.
A watershed moment for Ellgia with the acquisition of JE Churchill Plant Limited trading as Bell Waste Control in Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire. As well as a well-established collection business with 50 years of operating history in the local community, the acquisition delivered a 14 acre site with over 230k tonne of permitted processing capacity and opened the capability for Ellgia to deliver its strategy on turning waste to fuel.
Ellgia immediately consolidate its capability within North Lincolnshire with the acquisition of the assets and Business of Thompson Waste Recycling Limited.
2016
Ellgia expands its management capability with the development of the first board of directors with the appointment of Jack Lavington and Cameron Murdoch.
Ellgia invests in processing technology based in Scunthorpe and deliver its first tonne of RDF waste to EFW within the UK.
2017
Ellgia completes its current network with the acquisition of Purple Skips & Recycling in Prickwillow, Cambridgeshire, providing a transfer facility and the ability to move waste and recycling within its network of processing facilities and ensure cradle to grave and zero to landfill services for all of its customers across the East of England.
2018
Ellgia invests further in its bold growth ambitions and expands its management capability with recruitment of the Sales and Marketing Director, David Chamberlain.
2021
A major supply contract is developed for a 5-year anchor contract to deliver refuse derived fuel (RDF) to Ferrybridge EFW facility.
2022
A major supply contract is developed for a 5-year anchor contract to deliver solid recovered Fuel (SRF) to Geocycle, in Cauldon, Derbyshire and reducing the plants dependence on fossil fuels.
Ellgia completes its current board of directors and its management capability with recruitment of the Finance Director Nana Amonoo.
2023
A second major and extended supply contract is developed for a 10-year anchor contract to deliver RDF to Enfinium EFW for FM1 and FM2 at Ferrybridge.
